"REACH is a new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical substances. The new law entered into force on 1 June 2007."
"The aim of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. At the same time, innovative capability and competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry should be enhanced. The benefits of the REACH system will come gradually, as more and more substances are phased into REACH."
In response to the legislated environmental directives being instituted throughout the world, LightPath has established a comprehensive program that is intended to promote product compliance with the new laws. One notable directive is RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances).
The RoHS legislation restricts the use of certain hazardous substances to levels of less than 100-1000 ppm used in electronic products.
• Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
• Hexavalent Chromium
• Polybrominated Diphenylethers (PBDE)
All LightPath RoHS compliant parts are compatible with lead-free solder processes.
Part-specific RoHS information, including a RoHS Certificate of Compliance, is available on the website. The website will continually be updated as parts become compliant and when additional RoHS information is available.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) adopted final rules to implement reporting and disclosure requirements related to “conflict minerals,” as directed by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010. The rules require publicly traded companies to report annually to the SEC the presence of certain “conflict minerals” that are “necessary to the functionality or production” of products such reporting company manufactures or contracts to manufacture.
The definition of “conflict minerals” refers to gold, as well as tin, tantalum, and tungsten, derivatives of cassiterite, columbite-tantalite, and wolframite, originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or adjoining countries (“Covered Countries”).
We support these requirements to further the humanitarian goal of ending violent conflict in the Covered Countries, which has been partially financed by the exploitation and trade of “conflict minerals.”
To that end, our commitment is as follows:
• To support the aims and objectives of the U.S. legislation on the supply of “conflict minerals;”
•To not knowingly procure these “conflict minerals” from facilities originating in the Covered Countries, unless such facilities are certified as conflict free; and
• To request that our suppliers undertake reasonable due diligence with respect to their supply chains to ensure that minerals are solely sourced from mines and smelters outside of the Covered Countries or mines and smelters which have been certified by an independent third party as conflict free if sourced within the Covered Countries.
We aim to use only conflict free materials, parts and components in the products that we manufacture. If we discover that “conflict minerals” originating from the Covered Countries are used in materials, parts or components we procure, we will take appropriate actions to transition to a supplier using conflict free minerals.
